Halloween Vocabulary
Each type of worksheet has two versions, an easier set for beginner-level students and a slightly more difficult set for higher level groups. You can use both versions together in mixed level classes.
The easier of the two worksheets are the ones with fewer words (Match 5, Label 9, Solo Sort and the 2-partner survey). These worksheets are labelled “Small Set” at the bottom of the page because they use only 17 of the 27 words in the full Halloween vocabulary list.
Small Set Word List
The “small set” worksheet vocabulary list includes these 17 words: bag, bats, black cat, candy, costumes, ghost, haunted house, makeup, mask, monster, pumpkins, scared, spider web, trick or treat, vampire, witch hat and witch.
Full Set Word List
The words/pictures included in the harder worksheets, but not in the easier sets are: devil, Dracula, grave, jack-o’-lantern, mummy, skeleton, skull, tombstone and zombie.
Target Language for Communicative Activities
The labeling and matching worksheets focus on vocabulary building through writing and/or reading. The sorting and survey worksheets are personalizing, communicative activities. For example, after completing the written solo activity of sorting the Halloween items into personal like/ don’t like groups, students can then either try to find a classmate with similar likes and dislikes, discuss their likes with a partner, and/or present their (or their partner’s) likes/dislikes to the class.
Here’s some of the language which the Halloween worksheets practice:
- I like / I don’t like…
- Do you like…?
- We all / Some of us / None of us … + like
- Are you scared of… ?
- How scary is the … ?
- (It’s) a little scary / very scary
- (I’m) a little scared / super scared
