Target Language and Skills

Christmas Bingo

A 3×3 and a 4×4 bingo set which both use the same vocabulary list of 23 words- mainly nouns. The bingo squares have images with word labels underneath. The call sheet, which is the same for both games, has check boxes for keeping track of which words you’ve called. Or, you can also print the Christmas Flashcards, shuffle them up, and post words to the whiteboard as you call them.

Language skills: Bingo is mainly a listening activity, unless you have the students say the words back to you (with or without a sentence) when you check if they’ve really won.

Labeling Worksheets

There are two different labeling worksheets, both with 12 pictures. The first group of words contains decorations and other objects you see at Christmas. The second word group mainly covers vocabulary you would need to talk about Santa. The word “presents” is in both sets.

Language skills: Reading and writing singular, plural and proper nouns.

  • Worksheet A – bells, candles, candy canes, Christmas cards, Christmas tree, ornaments, presents, sledding, snowflakes, snowman, toys, wreath
  • Worksheet B – chimney, elves, fireplace, holly, mistletoe, North Pole, presents, reindeer, Rudolph, Santa Claus, sleigh, stockings

Matching Worksheets

Students draw a line connecting either the picture to the matching word, or connecting a verb to an object that makes sense. Multiple answers are possible with the verb matching worksheet; an answer key provides one set of options.

Language skills: Reading but no writing, other than name and date. Singular, plural and proper nouns. Verbs + objects. Verbs + prepositions + objects.

  • Matching Nouns – Two worksheets with 12 words per page, vocabulary divided exactly as the labeling worksheets, above.
  • Matching with Verbs – Two worksheets with 9 verbs per page. Worksheet A pairs 1-word verbs with objects. Worksheet B has verbs + prepositions along with objects.

Sorting Worksheets

These 6 worksheets ask students to sort 7 or 8 vocabulary words into groups, based on their personal opinions. The first two are solo activities, though individual students could pair up to compare answers afterwards. The third worksheet is a group activity.

Language skills: Reading, writing, and speaking: expressing personal preferences.

  • Sorting Worksheet A – I like / I don’t like + noun
  • Sorting Worksheet B – I like / I don’t like + gerund  + object
  • Sorting Worksheet C – All / Some / None of us + like + gerund + object

Christmas Surveys

There are 5 different surveys which require students to pair up to interview classmates and record the answers. Surveys A and B are circle-the-answer activities while Survey C involves star ratings. All the surveys are begging for follow-up activities such as: reporting answers to the class as a group leading to a listening pop-quiz on who likes what, or converting the data into either written sentences or a class chart.

Language skills: Reading and speaking; question and answer form of simple present.

  • Survey A  – Do you have any … at home?  + plural nouns
  • Survey B (2 versions*) – Do you ever… ?  + verb + object
  • Survey C (2 versions*) – How much do you like… ? + gerund + object

* The two versions differ in vocabulary, but the grammar structure is the same.

Find Someone Who… games

This traditional conversation game engages everybody in class all at once. The page lists 8 incomplete statements, such as “___ has gone sledding.” Students must get up and talk to each other to find the information they need to complete the task: finish every sentence with the name of a different classmate.

Each game two versions, which uses the same grammar structure with a different set of vocabulary.

Language skills: Reading and speaking. Question and answer form. 3rd person singular verb -s endings. Some negative statements and irregular verbs.
